Is Your Elderly Loved One Going to Live at Home? Here is What You Should Know!
If your elderly loved one is going to live at home, there are some things that you should know. Before diving into this information, be sure that you talk to your elderly loved one about their decision to live at home. Make sure they know that you are only a call away if they need something. Let them know that they can always get more help with elderly care.
Preparing Their Home
If your elderly loved one is going to keep living at home, their home might need some changes. For instance, you might need to move their bedroom to one of the rooms on the first floor. This may need to be done if your elderly loved one can’t go up and down the stairs as easily as they did in the past. In addition, you may need to put in a stairlift, better lighting, or move furniture around to make things easier and safer for your loved one. As time goes, on you and the elderly care providers may need to make some more small, but beneficial changes to their home, as well.
Creating a Plan for Health Care
Living at home might be the best option for your elderly loved one. However, now that they aren’t driving, they need to make sure they are still taking care of their health. Who is going to drive them to appointments? Does someone need to schedule appointments for them? Who is going to make sure they are taking all medications the doctor prescribes for them? Creating a plan for health care is a great idea. It will not only help your elderly loved one to be safe, but it will ensure everyone knows who is responsible for these things. It might involve you, elderly care providers, your elderly loved one, and others, too.
Meal Planning
Does your elderly loved one do well with their own grocery shopping? If not, they might need someone to go for them. Maybe they can easily make a list of healthy foods to get, but it hurts them too much to go grocery shopping. If this is the case, they can make the list, and you or an elderly care provider can do the shopping. Maybe your elderly loved one doesn’t know what meals to make or doesn’t have ideas on what to make for one person anymore. If this is the case, you or an elderly care provider can sit down with them to make a list.
These are some of the things that you should know if your elderly loved one will keep living at home. Many senior citizens safely live on their own for a long time when they get the necessary help.
